Ginger

Postby Monika » Sat Apr 29, 2006 5:14 pm

I'm looking for uses of root ginger.

I know that you can add it to drinks with, say, honey and lemon etc, but how and how much?

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

:please:

You can use it in cooking, especially chicken etc etc.

Root ginger can indeed be used in cooking as per Rowan. Try 1/2" grated in casserole of chicken. stir fry dishes, Indian and Arab dishes. Also used in rabbit casserole, shell fish dishes, with cooked cabbage dishes and plum or greengage crumble. Best to start with small amount as this is very pungent. (lovely grub) If you have dried root it will keep for up to six weeks if tightly wrapped and kept in a fridge.Hope this helps, cheers Penny.

Thanks, Rowan and Penny.

I know that it must sound strange, but I have never used ginger in anything, but I hear that it's good for the digestion so it may help me there.

I like many things you buy with ginger in them, like ginger jam, chocolate gingernuts, etc.

I simply didn't know how you used it (like grated, or steeped ... that kind of thing)

Ain't life wonderful - it's a continuous learning process!

Ginger is also lovely added to fruit and veg when juicing them. Hmm must get my juicer going again, it tends to be idle in winter.

As you like ginger I thought perhaps you might like this one.

Ginger, Red Onion and Mango Salsa.

4 cm ginger root. finely grated.
1 large mango, diced large
1 red onion, finely diced.
1/2 jar mango chutney.

Combine all the ingredients. If mango is very juicy it may be a little runny , if so pour away a little excess liquid.

Refreshing Salsa, ideal with spicy chicken kebabs. cheers Penny.
