Butter biscuits

Experimenting today came up with the following, Had some with 4-o.clock tea and found them to be very nice. Keeping this recipe for the future.


4 oz butter
4 oz lard
6 oz sugar
1 egg
10 oz plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons oats

Makes 26 - 28

Cream, butter, lard and sugar.
Add beaten egg.
Stir in flour, B.P. and oats.

Put good spoonfuls on a baking tray (I used a dessert spoon)
Leaving room to spread a little

Flatten each one slightly using back of a fork dipped in milk


Sprinkle each lightly with demerara sugar

Bake 25 - 30 minutes until golden.

Pre-heated oven 350.

I thought they took lard off the shelves? They do sound nice........

Wee one has been mithering for a go at baking, I might let her have a go at these.....

Had no problem getting lard, plenty in the supermarkets. A product called shortening is the same. Monsy, perhaps you could let your little one start with choc chip cookies. My grandchildren love to make them, for the pleasure of (licking the bowl ) after. I can remember my mother letting me do the same thing. Lovely grub.
It's lovely to see the little ones sitting on the kitchen floor, a big apron wrapped round them, fingers dipping into the bowl. Sheer contentment on their faces.cheers Penny. :mrgreen:
