After seeing all the tablets my mother used to take, all prescribed by the GP, and spending many years in an out of the doctor's surgery with first of all my husband and then my parents, I have avoided seeing the doctor on my own account, apart from the time I broke my ankle.
My mother was given valium and so many other drugs I have lost count. Before going to bed she would take five of the yellow valium tablets and two codis and then wake up half way through the night to take more codis ! I heard her phone the chemist once to order a new supply. It was like hearing her order the meat - 1 off this prescription, then two off another and by the way - I'm out of such and such ! Another time when she came to visit us she asked me if my husband had some heart tablets (she knew he did!) When I said yes, she asked me for one because she had been carrying heavy books round the library and felt faint. I refused and never heard the end of it.
So, yes, I do feel that some (not all) GPs over prescribe.
