I have taken Atenolol for blood pressure for years once or twice iv had an irregular heart beat,Doctors don't seem worried about.
June they have put John on satins for his cholesterol since then hes had terrible pains in his legs could this be related,he had type 2 diabetes diet controlled.

I was on the Beta-Blocker Atenolol for about 4yrs, I went into hospital with jaundice, had a blocked bile-duct, they took me off all medication which also included another bloodpressure pill. I really dont know if the pills had been responsible for my condition in any way. (probably not). But I had my medication changed and given a much lower dose. After a few months I had my gallbladder removed, gradually through the last year or two my GP has increased my medication and I am now back on Beta-blockers again. Am waiting now for blood results and he has told me I will be on Statins as well if my cholesterol is up.

DO YOU THINK WE SOMETIMES GET OVER_MEDICATED. Just interested.

I think so. I sometimes wonder if the bagload of pills I have to take every day are really necessary. My cholesterol was 3.2 last time it checked and I have to take statins - haven't worked out why yet!!

Sorry I've just rediscovered this thread. Yes the pains could well be caused by the statins, that is why I am fighting against taking them. I have enough aches and pains already. Every time I see the diabetes specialist he tells me that the WHO want all diabetics on statins. But my cholesterol levels are fine. 4.5 at last blood test but my nurse says that the WHO want them at 4.
Have we no control over what drugs we take?

Of course you have June ..... Just say NO :tantrum2:

When "himself" had his 1st stroke, the doctor wanted him to go on warferin to thin his blood, he refused, so now he just takes asprin, although the medics do keep trying to get him to change his mind

I am sure you are right in what you say Deja, but the way things are in the Health Service people are apprehensive to say too much because GP's are supposed to know best. Trouble is it seems the patient is no longer that important but just a statistic, if you argue against what they advise it could make life a bit difficult in an emergency.

Hello All
The new Doctor asked John to go back on the satins at least she explains more than the other Doctor after his last blood test Johns cholesterol was 3.5.
They think the pains in his legs are caused by a trapped nerve as all other tests have been negative

Poor Dita! I just heard of a friend's mother who has had something wrong with her pancreas and its been put down to the statins she was taking. Anyone else heard of this particular side effect?

No have not heard of that, but a male friend on duratics who is also diabetic was rushed into hospital after having a fit, it was caused because his sodium levels were so low, he was quite ill for a while too. He is on Beta-blockers,another BP pill and now on Statins. I honestly think GP's get quite alot of money for bunging us all on these medications and it helps their targets.

Rowan I've only just got round to reading this particular topic. I take exactly the same tablets for High Blood pressure as you, ---I don't have any side effects either apart from a dry mouth and feeling a bit 'stuffy' when I first wake up in a morning, but this is a small price to pay, as it took three years to find the right combination of tablets which suited me. Some of them made me feel llike a zombie.

swmbo tells me that what medication the Dr. gives you depends on what drug rep has been round that week.................just as well taking pot luck. They are all pretty much of a muchness. Beta blockers are normally the first thing one is prescribed for BP.

Take plenty of exercise, lose weight and cut down on salt intake. Meditation is also good for BP.

After seeing all the tablets my mother used to take, all prescribed by the GP, and spending many years in an out of the doctor's surgery with first of all my husband and then my parents, I have avoided seeing the doctor on my own account, apart from the time I broke my ankle.

My mother was given valium and so many other drugs I have lost count. Before going to bed she would take five of the yellow valium tablets and two codis and then wake up half way through the night to take more codis ! I heard her phone the chemist once to order a new supply. It was like hearing her order the meat - 1 off this prescription, then two off another and by the way - I'm out of such and such ! Another time when she came to visit us she asked me if my husband had some heart tablets (she knew he did!) When I said yes, she asked me for one because she had been carrying heavy books round the library and felt faint. I refused and never heard the end of it.

So, yes, I do feel that some (not all) GPs over prescribe.

I take 80mgs of Valsartan or Diovan whichever you prefer to call it and 2.5mgs of Bendroflumethizide a day for my blood pressure.
I had to go for a blood test last month and been told my kidneys are not as they should be.

Never a bloody dull moment.

Ah well I am NOT going to worry about it. Just going to enjoy life as it comes along.

ps Hubby going to see the Orthopaedic Consultant tomorrow - Wednesday -after three cancellations by the hospital.
Sitting on pins now hoping the phone doesn't go again to cancel it once more.

What's so bad about statins? I've been taking them for over two years now, but together with all the other medication I'm on, including beta blockers, diuretics and ACE inhibitors, I'm not sure what side effects are attributable what drug!

Just shows how much we trust our doctors, doesn't it? Must get an appointment today though - my nose has been running constantly since 7 pm last night and it is driving me round the bend! :dunno:
