How much is a portion?

Postby Emm » Sat Jun 25, 2005 5:32 pm

According to my doctor, I have to eat 5 portions each of veg and fruit a day.

But - how much is a portion?

I never thought to ask her.

How much is one portion of fruit?
A

One portion of fruit is, for example, 1 medium apple, or 1 medium banana, or 2 small satsumas or 3 dried apricots. A glass of 100% fruit juice only counts once a day, however much you drink. One portion of dried fruit counts, but other types of fruit and vegetables should be eaten to meet the rest of the 5 A DAY target.

Q

How much is 1 portion of vegetables?
A

One portion of vegetables is, for example, 3 heaped tablespoonfuls of cooked carrots or peas or sweetcorn, or 1 cereal bowl of mixed salad. Beans and other pulse vegetables, such as kidney beans, lentils and chick peas only count once a day, however much you eat. Potatoes don't count towards the 5 A DAY target because they are a 'starchy' food.

The wee one and I have just eaten a punnet full of strawberries, liberally sprinkled with pepper.

That's me healthy 'til tomorrow!

I was given the guideline that a portion is the amount you can hold in the palm of your hand - which works if you are thinking of babies and children too.

I haven't Daisy. I will look for it next time I invade Asda!

I always use black pepper. I also mix dried garlic grains in with it. I keep a wee pot for sprinkling over stuff that just wants a wee bit of bite.

Sheesh, pages on here are so slow loading tonight, been having a bit of trouble with them!

However, back to subject now I'm here!

When we lived in Spain a real fave was to squeeze fresh orange juice into a punch bowl, add same amount in wine as you had juice, then add strawberries to fill and leave over night to steep in fridge. Beautiful breckie come the morning!! 8)

Another good breckie was to soak museli overnight in lowfat yoghurt, and then top off with the above fruit mix. :)

The doctor also suggested I have Benecol every day - to help lower my cholesteral.

Just one snag - I don't like Yogurt - it is the small which puts me off.
But, me being a good girl - I am taking it - whilst pinching my nose so I can't smell it!!!

You could use Benecol spread, or the Flora equivelant
