This is easy to see. Rotorua Lake.
Little steaming holes.
Geysers squirt into the air.
You can have a marvellous spa massage.
You go for a lake cruise on the Lakeland Queen, enjoy a great lunch and listen to a very knowledgeable commentary if you wish.
Don't be tempted to jump into the Arsenic pool!
In AD186, when nobody lived here, not even Maoris, Lake Taupo erupted covering the North Island in debris. The eruption dwarfed Krakatoa and Vesuvius and was noted in China and the world's weather changed for many months. This graphic compares:
