Nightfall, Maisie's challenge

Nightfall
It’s nightfall again
Darkness envelopes this old house
It’s all so quiet
But for the scratching of a mouse.
In the moonlight
Out there on the front lawn
Is the old badger
With his mangy coat and both ears torn
I can hear dripping
It’s the leaking bathroom tap
I must remember
To call a plumber, him with the flat cap
The children are settled
Tucked tightly into their beds
I wonder if they’ve
Happy dreams going round their little heads
Listen, did you hear
A vixen calling for her mate
And next doors cat
Howling outside the back gate
Now the creaking timbers
The maritime ones up in the roof
Where we played
On rainy days in our distant youth
Oh what’s the point
In talking? You’re in the land of nod
You are snoring loudly
I’m awake here on my tod
Now my lids are drooping
I shall put away my book
Mum’s coming tomorrow
For dinner, what on earth shall I cook?
It’s nightfall again
Darkness envelopes this old house
It’s all so quiet
But for the scratching of a mouse.
In the moonlight
Out there on the front lawn
Is the old badger
With his mangy coat and both ears torn
I can hear dripping

Tucked tightly into their beds
