Christmas of Yesteryear.

Christmas of Yesteryear.

[align=center]What happened to the old-fashioned Merry Christmas of yesteryear
When we made our own paper trimmings and Santa’s only big fear
Was getting his behind burnt from the chimneys he had to descend
When children believed in Santa and thought he was their friend.

Because he had left a carved wooden train and a storybook too
A china teaset for a little girl and possibly a kaleidoscope to view.
Perhaps a drum or trumpet and a bright new shining threepenny bit
Excited youngsters waking the house because they could not sit

Where did the family Christmas go that we knew of so long ago
When everyone went to one house for lunch including Auntie Flo
Someone playing the Jews harp and another playing the drum
Dinner was cooking in the kitchen, what about poor old mum.

After sating their appetite everyone would listen to the King
Telling of the years events and of hopes the New Year will bring.
It’s a different world we live in now from what it was years ago.
All glitter and tinsel before the season and pricey presents on show.

TV advertising to brainwash children into pestering Mum and Dad
Many parents go into debt to satisfy their childrens latest fad.
NO! things are not the same any more, its too commercialized
Nowadays it seems as though everyone is being pressurized

Into buying the most exotic and expensive gifts to give to family
But the gift of love and a big hug will certainly do for me.
Ok so I am looking back to Christmases of many years ago.
But they seemed to be full of meaning then not all glitter and show.

Somewhere along the way the true spirit of Christmas went astray
So may I wish everyone a good old fashioned Merry Christmas Day.
May you be with your loved ones and in touch with friends and family
A peaceful and Happy Christmas to you all is the wish from me.

Did you write that, Maisie? It's just lovely :grouphug:

And all so true!! I hate all the commercial palaver and it gets crazier, every year !!! My kids used to make paper chains and when I was a kid we listened to the queen on the world service, as the king then was. XXXX Family Favourites was a firm favourite or was it still Hands Across The Sea? Cliff Mitchelmore and his missus?

We all got rich ........... oh! you're not rich ........ you're on the internet! What did Einstein say, all things are relative ......... Everybody remembers leaving their door open when they were young ............ why not, wasn't a lot to steal ....... actually our key was on a piece of string behind the letterbox ............ but so was everybody's ........... but ........ we were all were happy .......... now that I think of it from an adult point of view and not a kid ............... hmm ......... I remember .....
Cut me some slack here .......... I'm cynical ....... just home and read everything Maywalk has ever written ......... not just here but her website ....... different days .. Merry Christmas when it happens.
P.S.
I didn't read all of Maywalks stuff this morning, as it reads there, but over a period of time. Excellenty!!

Yes Anya I did write it but I forgot to put my name under it.

I was feeling rather blue and having seen young mothers getting traumatised by their children when shopping it just made me sit and write it. :huffin:
Parents are bamboozled into buying expensive stuff for the children today because their mates have it or its being advertised on the TV, irrespective of cost.

As Polter said its a different era that I yearn for when everyone was on the same par AND you could say NO to the children and it was understood by them.

That is a lovely poem Maisy.
When I went to see my granddaughter's Christmas play(she's 5) I thought it was a nativity as she was Mary.
As it happens it had a very good moral.
Santa was on atrike as he was fed up with greedy children sending long lists of 'I wants'so he went on strike and took them on a magicl tour around the world to see all the poor children in different countries.
Then they went to Bethlehem in a time machine to arrive just as Jesus was being born, and they learned the true meaning of Christmas, and how lucky they all were.
I really enjoyed it.
A closed mouth gathers no foot.

Thanks Widget.

I would have loved to have seen it Saes.
That sounds a great way to teach children about those worse of than themselves.

A lovely poem Maisie.

One consolation is, just like we say now, our grandchildren will be saying to their grandchildren in many years to come........................."Christmas was fun in our day."
