Lost in Darkness

This is a poem I wrote when I lived at Wollaton, Nottingham and because of all the extraneous light from the street lights, we seldom, saw any stars. Occasionally, when there was a really cold, frosty night we would see the night sky. That wasn't often and I used to yearn to see the stars.
Lost in Darkness
In a time, many years gone by.
A world of wonder was yours and mine.
There, within the ink-black sky
A million, billion stars did shine.
And as you gazed in sheer delight
Upon a back drop that is no more.
In contemplation of the sight
You realised how small you were.
It was so easy then to perceive the might
Of the architect who placed them there.
Awe now all gone in neon light
And murky brimstone-coloured air.
Pity the children of today
For past night skies they will never see
And the myriad stars which light the way
To the magic of eternity
Lost in Darkness
In a time, many years gone by.
A world of wonder was yours and mine.
There, within the ink-black sky
A million, billion stars did shine.
And as you gazed in sheer delight
Upon a back drop that is no more.
In contemplation of the sight
You realised how small you were.
It was so easy then to perceive the might
Of the architect who placed them there.
Awe now all gone in neon light
And murky brimstone-coloured air.
Pity the children of today
For past night skies they will never see
And the myriad stars which light the way
To the magic of eternity
