Shipping container shopping has got underway in central Christchurch in a project to restart the city's businesses.
Prime Minister John Key officially opened the project on Saturday, with 27 businesses opening their doors in Cashel Mall.
"This is an important step in reopening the CBD red zone to residents and retailers alike, and gives more certainty to people as they look to the future of this great city," Mr Key said.
The mall is being opened ahead of the startof New Zealand Cup and Show week next Saturday, to give displaced businesses temporary accommodation.
The project has been threatened with a lawsuit by the director of the London Boxpark project pop-up mall, who is accusing organisers of breaching intellectual property rights.
Restart director Paul Lonsdale says the project does not look anything like Boxpark, except both use shipping containers.Unquote.
