Oh Andere, what a terrible 24 hours you have had. As you say, good thing the car chose the local area to break down, rather than the motorway. You are due for a restful week or two to get over the holiday and post-holiday troubles. I hope you are feeling better.
A week ago while my house frontage was being painted by the ever-reliable Jimmy, my boiler gave up. It was 13 years old and the average life span they are given is ten years, like most appliances nowadays. The plumber - also neighbour - (the ever-reliable Stuart) has completed installing the replacement boiler, same make as before, a Vaillant. He was working in the heat and this week I have kept the house breezy with five blower fans. Three are mine and two were left here by my daughter when they upgraded to new super-duper more attractive fans! Me - as long as household items do their job, appearances come second. Having said that, I must strip down and clean the two oldest fans because it must be three years since they were done. That will be after I make the balance payment to the plumber. Too many big expenses at once!

Feeling glad the boiler chose mid-Summer rather than mid-winter! Also, thank goodness for the immersion heater supplying hot water for the few days. Trixie has found some great shady spots, though instructions tell us to keep cats indoors in heatwaves! Some evenings I am watering the garden, and she appears from deepest shrubbery spots before she gets watered. :sunglasses:

Trixie has more sense than Lucy, who will lurk under a bush, unknown to me, and then emerge all dripping and reproachful when she gets a soaking.

Madam is in the dog house (cat house? No, that has connotations ...) at present. I was woken by the thunderstorm around 3am and, as I lay wishing it would go away, realised I could hear LK howling as though in pain. Thinking she was either ill or had developed a previously unknown fear of storms, I made my way to the kitchen where the noise was coming from. In the ambient light (I try not to put lights on if I wake at night; they destroy my urge to sleep) she was hunkered in front of the dishwasher, making an unearthly noise. Ignored me when I spoke so I bent down to touch her. She was damp so had obviously been out in the rain but still no real response so i snapped on the overhead lights which took her completely by surprise and she let go of the tiny mouse she'd been holding under a paw! Eek!! Mouse promptly shot into the tiny space between dishwasher and washing machine and, growling, LK tried to follow. Oh, joy! I pulled the dishwasher out as far as I could to give her some access then decided I could only leave her to it so firmly closed the door from kitchen to hall and went back to bed, wide awake by this time. No further sound was heard. This morning, no sign of mouse and LK behaving normally which implies she eventually caught it and took it outside again. Previously, if one has got away from her indoors, she's spent the next three days just sitting and staring at the spot it disappeared.

I'm wiped out today; OH slept through all of it - storm, cat howls, my swearing - and he's forever telling me he doesn't sleep very well!

Viv, you were so lucky with your boiler. Thank goodness it's July not January. The boiler here when we moved in was over 20 years old according to the plumber who replaced it. It was a massive thing that occupied half the airing cupboard and its replacement is about the size of a shoebox but does the job with much greater efficiency and economy.

The car is back from the garage; our engineer checked it and cleared the computer faults that caused the problem but recommends we take it to the local automatic transmission specialist in Newark for a proper overhaul. Neither of us feels like starting any long journeys until that's done so OH is going to arrange that tomorrow.

It's been ridiculously hot here today - far too hot to sit outside in our newly renovated space. It's a little cooler now so we'll eat dinner outside in an hour or so. Tomorrow, I arranged to meet a couple of friends for coffee and gossip, the only time for weeks when we're all free together but I fear town and the getting there and back will be hellish. The last prediction I saw was for 34C here. Phew! Stay cool and hydrated aand do as little as possible :sunglasses:

Must be the hot weather. OH was sitting at the front of the bungalow when up marched a neighbour's cat with a mouse in his mouth. Chappie here, just finished the lawn. Don't know how he can work in this heat. Going to be hotter tomorrow so the weatherman says. So, better stay indoors. Take care all. cheers Penny

A grey day here; still very muggy with a couple of rain showers and continuing to feel oppressive.

The good news is that OH took the car to Newark yesterday and they ran all the diagnostic tests while he waited - and they can't find anything wrong?!? Just One of Those Things and we'll never know what caused the problem :dunno: .

The other good news is that LK went for her check up and vaccinations this morning. Such a good girl! We saw a vet we haven't met before, a nice woman whose manner seemed to soothe LK greatly. She checked her over and, aside from reminding us to keep an eye on her arthritic back legs and take her back if my homeopathic treatments stop having effect (well, of course I would. I'm not a sadist!) has sent her home with a clean bill of health.

Since then, I've stripped and remade beds, including mattress covers, done all the laundry and am now drying it in the tumble dryer. So annoying! Days of dry weather and then it rains just when I want to hang stuff out. Hoping it improves at the weekend so we can go to Heckington show.

Hope everyone's feeling a little better and that we can all get a decent night's sleep soon.

Save me a bit of your minty Aero, Maggieh!! :candy:

It's rained hard here most of the day and my beautiful hydrangeas have been beaten to the ground with their heavy flower heads over burdened with water  . I was out in the rain earlier trying to prop up the one by the front door with bamboo stakes because the flowers were just lying across the path waiting for callers to tread on them ... The one at the back is more difficult because it's a much bigger bush and needs more support than my little stakes can offer. Bliddy weather!

Needless to say, we haven't been anywhere today and tomorrow looks almost as bad - but I live in hope as I'd love to go to Heckington show, just not in the monsoon.

Enjoy your weekend, all.

I was trying to draw a bear yesterday afternoon as Im making Logan a little card for his 6th birthday.I will not see him on the day so he will have another birthday on the Saturday.Back to the drawing board this afternoon.

I must get motivated again and excercise on the stairs up/down with rubbish. :roflmao:

Hi, all and I hope nobody's been washed away in the torrents of rain we've been threatened with? It was a lovely morning here but clouded over at lunchtime and, since then, there's been a couple of hefty showers - nothing like the Apocryphal amounts predicted. Personally, I'm getting really tired of all these dire warnings; makes you think about the boy who cried Wolf!...

Not a lot happened here the past couple of days. We didn't make it to Heckington show on Sunday because local radio said the showground and the car park were flooded ... For some reason, I'm not sleeping properly at present, even with my frozen hot water bottle for coolness, and feel too wiped out to do anything much and finding it hard to get motivated. Wouldn't mind changing places with LK for a while. Nobody objects to her spending the entire afternoon Zzzzzzzz on my bed!
