Black Cats

Postby lavonne » Thu Aug 10, 2017 7:40 pm

I always believed Black cats were supposed to be lucky ,but when my friend chose one from a rescue centre she was told that they have problems rehoming Black cats because people believed they were Unlucky. Then on the Super vet rescue show, on tele last night, they said the same thing ,black cats are thought to be unlucky. What do you think ?

I think it's total tripe. Either way, lucky or unlucky, it cannot be and is utter, ridiculous superstition.

I understood that, traditionally, the Brits regard a black cat as lucky and the US-ians as unlucky. But Monika's quite right and it's all utter hogwash. Sadly, however, all cat rescue organisations do have a problem homing black cats and kittens because of this idiotic perception.
I sometimes wonder if the same fools who reject a black cat would reject a child because he had, say, red hair or green eyes .. :dunno:

When I was a young new housewife, I made friends with a neighbour in her fifties One day she came round with a broken nail which was hanging off and when I offered to cut it off she became quite animated and alarmed. Apparently, to cut it would mean that she would fall under a bus, get struck by lightning or some such terrible disaster before the day was out ................. because IT WAS FRIDAY

Yes, it depends on the culture. In some cultures they are unlucky, in others lucky.

The unlucky versions stems from the fact that black cats are widely regarded as a witches' familiar, and in myth are often pictured behind them on their broomstick.

Sounds like me Laurie. I have always had black cats apart from one rescue puss which was grey. Love them all whatever shade. Cheers Penny
