Through my window...

Postby caroljoyce » Tue May 15, 2018 9:18 am

This morning I saw a rabbit scampering about on my lawn. I've seen it a few time in the past week or so.
What I'm wondering is: Will it do any harm to my plants - Should I discourage it?

How do I discourage it? I don't want to kill/trap the poor thing. It looks so happy.

What would you do?

Rabbits will eat most green things, Carol.

Our pet New Zealand White had the run of the garden, and we never had t mo the lawn, except for his toilet area (they keep to a set place).

He absolutely loved garlic!

We had a wild one in the garden a few years ago. A neighbour caught it and took it to some nearby farmland, but this may not be practical for you.

Keeping Squirrels Out of the Garden

By Julie Martens.
Remove what attracts them. The sight and smell of fallen fruit, nuts, and seeds can lure squirrels to your yard for feeding. ...
Repel them. Search online and you'll find many recipes for repelling squirrels. ...
Distract them. ...
Scare them. ...
Exclude them. ...
Protect your harvest. ...
Cover bare soil.

They also say a dog or cat will scare them.

Rabbits do a lot of damage to plants, Carole. Unless this is a domestic rabbit which has escaped, there will be plenty more close by and could pose quite a threat to your garden.
If at first you don't succeed, sky diving isn't for you!

A friend who lives on the Suffolk coast has her garden regularly invaded by rabbits who live in the grassland nearby. From sad experience, she knows that absolutely EVERYTHING in the garden has to be protected with wire mesh or heavy netting. The place looks like a bizarre sort of war zone which, in a way, I suppose it is. Bunnies v Veg!

Are rabbits the same as squirrels?

Sorry Carol, age related problem, getting me animals mixed up.
:hide: :groaner:
But rabbits do eat a lot of plants, keep shooing it away, are you sure it is not an escape pet? normally there are more than one.

I take it you mean humanely.

Trap and release is best.

You could try a cat - scarer. Some of them are adjustable. One of these might work

The instructions are not of the finest Carol. Set both controls to the mid position as a base line, and experiment.

If rabbits are like cats it may take a few days but it will eventually stop coming.
