1. You wouldn't go UP a hill to find water! A well or borehole would be on level ground to eliminate the need to pump the water up to the top.

Not invariably, Andere.

Our spring bubbled up half way down (or up!) a hill, so we did have to go uphill to get our water. Three or four pails a day, but such water. I can taste it yet, 75 years on!

We weren't the first to use it. We found a well preserved Roman coin in the mud!

D'you know, I knew when I typed that answer that someone, probably Laurie, would contradict me, with perfect reason. I just couldn't be bothered, at the end of a hot afternoon, to muster a better (and succinct) response to the question!

PS: So maybe it was the Romans who started the whole wishing-well/coins in the fountain tradition? Or perhaps someone simply had a hole in his pocket?!

Oh dear, Andere, am I that predictable?

To be fair, my answer was formulated before I read yours.

We were only about ten miles from Isca as the legion marches, so a fresh spring would have been a good rest point. No metal detonators in those days, of course, but I'm sure the area would have repaid a decent search.
