How rude & arrogant President Trump is.He did not bow to the Queen when meeting her,and Melania did not curtsy to her. Also .when walking with the Queen Trump walked in front of her.Being American is no excuse, many other Americans had met our Queen and observed the rules of English curtesy

It's not a rule but a convention, a courtesy, and Mr Trump, has never been great shakes at courtesy.

I don't think he's the kind of man to bow down to anybody!

The Trumps held out their hands to shake, a centuries old way of greeting and demonstration of "no threat". It is what I would have done. It's more than time for the medieval flummery of bowing and flummery to die.

Like all of us, you're entitled to your opinion, but imagine the uproar in the States if a Brit failed to stand when the President entered the room.

When in Rome and all that.

if you don't subscribe to all that flummery then don't put yourself in a position on where you have to take part.

I have long felt that it is time we stopped bowing and curtsying to the Royal family of frail, fractured morality.

Those feelings began with over-arrogant Margaret and considering that when Charles becomes King, Camilla will be Queen, I would rather be locked in the Tower than show the least deference to either of them.

At present, I respect the Queen, but that's it!

I certainly won't/don't, Laurie! When I was (briefly) a student nurse in the late 60s, a minor royal person came to open a new wing of the hospital where I was training. Somebody in admin had the bright idea that all the first year students should be assembled on the steps at the main entrance to welcome her. We were told to stand quietly with our hands behind our backs unless The Guest (I think it was the Duchess of Kent but memory fades...) spoke to us, in which case, we must do a full curtsey before responding. Without even thinking about it, I shrieked, "I'm not curtseying to anybody. No way". It really was an instinctive reaction and got me some startled looks. I was then firmly told that, if that was really how I felt, my presence was not required. I spent the afternoon of The Visit practising head bandages and felt I'd missed nothing!

Thinking about this now, I think what bothers me most isn't that some people are willing to bow or curtsey but that there are are others who think it's OK to be bowed/curtseyed to.

Then don't do it, it's not compulsory, just a convention.

At least the Americans don't expect us to do the arm across the chest thing, for their national anthem. It cracks me up.

Each country has its own idiosyncrasies.

A friend of mine was leaving an African country and found he was expected to leave unexchanged small denomination notes in a charity box.

He declined and tore the mores up and put them in a bin.

He was immediately arrested for insulting the president, whose picture was on the mores.

It took the diplomatic service ten days to get him out, and he had to pay the costs of his own deportation.

Why not just respect what others do, no point in keep haggling over things. Good discussions are fine but so many turn into angry disagreements, very often leading nowhere. Life's too short. cheers Penny :please: :please:

I don't think anyone's getting angry here, Penny. We've all got our own views and ideas but discussions like this are what forums are for, surely? The internet equivalent of a chat around a pub table or coffee shop sofas, if you see what I mean?
