I thought I was over it and the Mary Hopkin came on with "Those Were the Days" and broke me completely.

That makes me feel sad for you, Laurie, and you have my deepest sympathy. The only thing in its favour is that it is all the natural process of bereavement which is helping you to heal so that, later on, you will be able to enjoy some of your memories and be able to smile at them.

The awful thing though is that these moments will never completely fade away and you will feel this same sadness now and again and, when it does, it is heartbreaking.

I know what you mean. Although my marriage ended in an unpleasant divorce in 2001, If "our tune", from when we were courting, comes on the radio unexpectedly it still chokes me up slightly.
My second relationship, as some of you might remember, was with 'Dragon Lady' (who is still in the memberlist)
She died of cancer in 2011 which was a very sad time, but conversely if I play "our tune" it sends a shiver up my spine as it reminds me of our happy times together

Soon over. It wasn't a particularly "special' " song, we'd been married seven years when it came out. That bell like voice and the simple lyrics touched a raw nerve.

I can see into that "tavern". Herself with her usual coterie, and the smile, like the sun coming out, as she caught sight of me coming through the door.

Sad, yes, but glad too, that I have such memories.
