When we have our new wet room installed I've been told to expect two weeks of disruption.

I'm sorely tempted to book a holiday and go away during the worst of it - the first 5 days probably.

I don't know if I dare leave them though.

I would be worried incase they didn't shut the front door when they have finished at end of day.

I'd give my son a key and ask him to check every evening.

We did, though not for the duration, just every day.

We let them in and then went out for the day.

They promised to leave a working toilet every day, which they did, and we went on all those day trips we'd been promising ourselves but never got around to.

Worked perfectly.

Make sure you inform your insurers.

Why would you need to inform the insurance people?
Carol i would leave them ,and get your son to check whenever he can and take anything valuble out of the house.

In case they cause damage and they're not insured for it, or in case they steal something.

i very much doubt if Carol's son could remove the television, or any computers, or her jewellery, or Tony's power too's out of the house.

We plan to have some work done next spring and, rather than live in chaos, my plan is for us to book ourselves into a local hotel or B&B for the duration so we can check up on work and progress during the day; lock up safely at night and so on. And yes, I shall inform the insurers.

I recently heard of insurance companies refusing to pay out when someone was away on holiday and made it public online on various forums and they were burgled . It's somewhere in the tiny print apparently.

There are black sites that sell this sort of information.

Some years ago my cleaner left without returning my key (or any notice!).

My insurance company will not now let me give a key to my current cleaher, even though she's CRB cleared.
