Frozen Food.

Postby Maywalk » Sat Oct 20, 2018 12:14 pm

Like others of my generation and not wanting to be a burden to anyone by being independent
I get my own meals although I can only do ready or frozen meals now because I cant grip heavy saucepans
OR peel potatoes.
I cant say I am over excited about frozen meals.
They are definitely not like I used to make myself BUT it was my own decision and I will stick by it.
Anyway on Wednesday of this week I got out of the freezer a WELL KNOWN know brand of Bangers and Mash.
I had never had it before and decided the mash might taste better than others because
very often the frozen mash on the dinners I have had goes like ruddy water and tastes horrible.

It had the sell by date as 2020 BUT when I took it out of the box the mash was ruddy mouldy.

I wont name the brand because I have sent a photo of the dinner plus a photo of the sell by date that
has another number on it that must evidently be the batch number to them.
I have also been on the phone to head office complaints department and they have asked me to give them
20 days to go through the batch to sort the problem out.
I agreed to this as long as they got back to me otherwise the photo of the dinner and the brand name will
be going on the net.
I told them I wasn't looking for any compensation and the reason I have contacted them
is the fact that many elderly who have to use frozen meals to survive are also poor sighted.
My own eyesight is not brilliant but there are folks worse off than myself and they could put the meal
in the microwave and eat it without being aware what they had done and perhaps finish up with food poisoning.

Luckily I dont put any in the microwave I do my frozen meals in the oven and that is how I saw the mould just before I was
going to put it in.
I will wait now to see if they get back to me but meanwhile I certainly wont be buying their goods.

Like you I can't prepare veg any more, and I have been using frozen meals four ten years or so, and never had problems, but we all have our own experiences.

If you don't like the mash, Maisie, by the prepared and cooked mash from the supermarket, say half a dozen at a time and freeze it yourself. A knob of butter, some pepper and a sprinkling of parsley and it comes up quite nicely. You can also get mashed swede and carrot and so on.

Don't buy supermarket frozen meals, they're generally pretty disgusting. Buy their fresh meals with your normal supermarket buy, and freeze them yourself. Buy a prepared stew/casserole pack of veg and add some diced meat.

For prepared frozen meals I only use the specialised home delivery firms. I use Wiltshire, Oakhouse or Cook. As you say, better to do them in the oven, and follow the the instructions, they know their own products best. If they say don't pierce the film lid there's a good reason for it!

Trouble is Laurie I dont eat a lot now and I dont like veg. I take any carrot off any meal that I have because I dont like it.
I tried the Wiltshire and Oakhouse but they did not taste much different to the others to me.

I have not tried the Cook. Are they on line?

back in the 1970's I spent 3 years as a quality control supervisor for the Unilever Birds Eye factory in Hastings, (New Zealand). When you are churning out hundreds of thousands of an item there will be the occasional error and most producers will want to know about it or they cannot solve the problem. They will usually attempt to apologise and replace the item at least. Feedback, even before computers, IS important. :-)
In passing- I have done 'Meals on wheels' for about 5 years where I used to live and I will be starting here next month, The meals got good feedback from our customers. They were always served hot and ready to eat in a tear top tray.
Civilisation is a veneer, easily soluble in alcohol.

Hi Michael. Reading your reply has set the wheels in motion regarding the meals on wheels and looking on the net it looks as though it is done here where I live.
To be honest I have never thought about it before because I was told ages ago that it had been stopped.
However having found a phone number I will give them a ring tomorrow to find out if it is correct and if they do deliver here.
It is certainly worth finding out about because my fingers are getting so weak now I am finding it awkward to even use a knife and fork. SOD THIS GETTING OLD BUSINESS.
Thanks for the idea and the input. :bighugs:
