mystery - Where is my Enamel Plate?

Going to use it yesterday, but nowhere to be found!

it's not the sort of thing that gets broken or wears out so what have I done with it?

Last time I used was two years ago for some toasted cheese.

Am I destined never to have toasted cheese again?

Wow Laurie ........... what a memory you have. I can't remember what I ate last week, never mind two years ago!

Mind you, your memory does seem to be rather selective and favours the food you eat rather than what you eat it off. :dunno:

Can't really claim much to memory.

It's the only fireproof dish I have suitable for toasted cheese, I rarely use it for anything else and it's two years since I had any!

Cheese on toast no problem, of course, and a once a week regular with me.

Toasted cheese is a different proposition.

The plate is nearly red hot, hot enough to scorch the breadboard, which is why I use fireproof not standard ovenproof.

With my weak grip it can be a bit dangerous which is why I don't have it often, but I have to acknowledge my Welsh heritage sometimes!

I used to cook toasted cheese on an old enamel plate that belonged to my mother but it got so chipped and battered that I decided it was probably a health hazard and chucked it out. I replaced it with a stainless steel shallow oval dish/plate that I got in Poundland (for £1, natch). I know that isn't a lot of help if you fancy toasted cheese now but, if the enamel plate doesn't surface soon, it might be worth dropping into Poundland (other pound stores are available!) when you're passing.

Nearest poundshop or similar is 50 miles, so it's on line again.

Don't like stainless steel dishes for serving, keep expecting somebody to fill it with surgical instruments!

You made me think that perhaps I have thrown it away. I remember it was badly chipped, and chipped enamel is so dangerous that my H&S background might have kicked in!

Have often had cheese on toast but never heard it called toasted cheese. According to google, toasted cheese is a slice of bread, next, slice of cheese, next another slice of bread, etc, then all cooked together. It also says during cooking bread becomes toasted. Very odd to me. cheers Penny

Pyrex or similar would not stand the heat needed for toasted cheese. Needs to be fireproof not ovenproof. Cheese on roast is entire'y different.

As I said, the plate is neatly glowing red, and it requires quite careful handling - it can be capable of igniting cloth or paper. Any bread would just be finders. There are legends about toasted cheese in my native Wales!

Before the universal availability of grills it was made in front of a roaring fire, perhaps on a swing hob.
