4. Not sure if an old atheist is qualified to answer this but wasn't it in commemoration of Moses parting the Red Sea to lead the Israelites out of Egypt (ie, they "passed over " the sea bed)?

Well, the subsequent Passovers (NT rather than OT) added in the part about the angel passing over to save the newborn Christ from King Herod's murder squad.
But strangely it is linked to Easter not Christmas. This year Passover is from 19th - 27th April. If a non-equinoxer may quote: "The Passover begins on the 15th day of the month of Nisan, which typically falls in March or April of the Gregorian calendar. Passover is a spring festival, so the 15th day of Nisan typically begins on the night of a full moon after the northern vernal equinox."
