Tea Bags

Postby Penny » Wed Jul 31, 2019 1:52 pm

This year, not being able to shop I changed to tea bags. Anyone else use them. To my surprise, everything becomes miscoloured. I use a steel teapot and ordinary crockery. Everything seems to be cloudy in a tea coloured way. I have to keep cleaning the pot specially as it gets darker each day. Driving me nuts. Anyone else noticed this with tea bags. Never had this trouble using ordinary tea. cheers Penny. :tantrum2:

I use a ceramic teapot; a traditional round brown one in the kitchen and a white one in the bedroom. I've been using Twinings Assam teabags for more years than I care to remember and don't have this problem. The white pot and the mugs go in the dishwasher: the brown pot gets rinsed in the sink after use.

Way back in the late 50s/early 60s, my mother took a fancy to melamine kitchen ware but gave it up within a very short time because cups and teapot were stained an indelible brown like a pub ceiling in the days when punters could smoke, plus my dad said it made the tea taste of plastic!

Perhaps it depends on the brand of tea and some blends are more likely to stain than others?

For visitors I keep PG Tips teabags. No probs with colour. I have never touched tea with a bargepole for 60 years since I left boarding school where the colourless slop/dishwater put me off for life.

I seldom drink tea now. It was my mainstay at one time but it just does NOT taste the same any more.
When I did use it regularly I noticed my cup going brown and no amount of scouring would get it clean so I bought some denture tablets and once I saw it started discolouring the cup I used to leave one in the cup overnight with boiling water poured on it up to the brim standing in my kitchen sink.It gets the biggest majority of the stain out. Having said that I use a mug now.
Cups are too fiddly for me now. I dont use kettles either because I cant lift them I use one of these and would not be without it.

Thanks Maisy, looks super. Lovely to hear from you, hope you are keeping up your spirits. Sorting out the prblem I found the old recipe of a couple of dessert spoons of baking powder topped with boiling water does the trick. Fizzes up like mad so be careful if anyone tries it. Leave overnight then rinse away. Very good. Meanwhile, take care and look after yourself. cheers Penny

Hi Penny. Yes that is another remedy for tea stains.
If it does that to your cup what must it do to your innards.?
I have found the teamaker VERY good and the only thing I have to lift is the filter jug to fill it up so with that having cold water in it and if my fingers go in a spasm I wont get scalded.
Keep smiling and good to know you are still doing the quizzes and I hope the hip is getting better, Cheers Maisie.

When I was travelling around Australia, back in 1961, we drank "black billie tea". A handful of tea leaves in a billie of boiling water . No milk, it was too hot to last. Those were the days! :-)

Yes we carried it with us Frolique, in a canvas bag hung over the front fender. The canvas seeped a little which kept it cool.
