It’ll All Be Over By Christmas

How could a foreign murder lead to this?
Millions of citizens leaving with a last kiss
To fight for their country ‘and do their part’
To leave and break their families’ heart
Well, at least it’ll be over by Christmas

From the young to men retired,
All those suitable were required
To go overseas, and fight as planned,
Just because someone trod on an ally’s land
It's a palaver, but they’ll be back for Christmas

The soldiers find war is not as advertised
Their trenches are musty and their rations deprived,
But when battle breaks out on the muddy field
Their bloody, tragic fate is sealed
Such loss is sad, but it will end by Christmas, won’t it?

Months of conflict pass, and more die each day
No matter their age or what they had to say
And when winter bites, it is worse than ever
And despite the best of the countries’ endeavours
It wasn’t all over by Christmas

When the new year comes around, spirits are low
Many freeze in trenches under the thick snow
Yet despite this, a glimmer of hope glows,
As upon fields raged with battle and blows,
A small red poppy begins to glow

He won a Schools Poetry competition with this. He was to read it at today's assembly but has gone down with Norovirus. This is not stagefright.....he has no nerves when performing, whether singing solo, or acting Romeo!

Hello Dita, thank you for your lovely message to Charlie. I hear he is feeling much better today and has had pumpkin soup made by his Dad.

The very best aspect of Charlie's 'giftedness' of which we are all very proud, is that he is a very modest boy! To praise him in front of anyone would cause much embarrassment, he would point out something his friends are good at!
I am going back to the usual page of chat, and wondering, as always, where everyone is.
