Thanks Laurie but I think Joanna rhymes with piano rather than lumley. Still I expect it is the way you look at these things.

All languages evolve, even slang. Who now uses "Gamp" for an umbrella but it was quite common when I was a child.



The thing about rhyming slang is that the expression used rarely forms part of the actual line, like apples for stairs, syrup for wig, Barnet for hair and so on.

I gloss over things like cobbler's and berk!
