a nation of shopkeepers

"the English are a nation of shopkeepers" - this expression was attributed to Napoleon.

If this is the case, and you had a shop, what would you sell?

For me, I think clocks.

It would have to be wool and all things connected with knitting. All those lovely colours and things to make.
It would need to be a big shop with comfy chairs and coffee on the go all the time......bliss!

For 15 years I was an Off Licence Manager ........for 15 years I was not sober :dunno: had to sample the stock, didn't I?

I do have a shop.... and for the past 30 odd years we've made a living selling clothes to big men.
If you remember the TV series 'Peak practice' it was filmed near us and their wardrobe dept came to our shop whenever they had a big actor to kit out. Once they had a tug of war team on the show and we kitted them all out.

We also specialised in Industrial clothing and footwear.... in addition to normal sized clothes and shoes for men, women and children.

You could come to us and buy anything from a babies nappy to a hard helmet for a building site.
We've downsized a lot now but still keep the shop open 3 days a week for our regular customers... Tony calls it his hobby.

I would imagine that is interesting as you seemed to cater for everything. I used to work in an old fashioned hardware shop, I loved it, we sold all the old stuff that you never see now. Nails by weight, gin-traps, keys, pots & pans etc: ammunition for rifles, parafin. I could go on all day.

For me, it would have to be plants and flowers - anything from the exotic to the tried and tested old faithfuls.

Ah - bliss!

Hubby often says if we were younger he would open a little tea and biscuit cafe called 'Penny's Place' for me. For himself, a camera and clocks shop. Having been brought up in a general store I don't think I would like a shop at all. cheers Penny. :grouphug:
