Susan Boyle was just a modest woman, with a great gift of a voice, who was propelled to hysterical fame and immediately became an Aunt Sally. I find all that very sad.

I never watch those programmes but if someone has an opportunity for a better life, that is wonderful.

Did you ever watch the documentaries about Hannah Hauxwell (that was her name, I think?) who lived on fifty pounds a year, on a bleak Yorkshire Moor? Later made into a book Too Long a Winter. A very touching story.

I dont watch the show either Anya.
This video was sent to me and I was pleasantly surprised to hear a lovely strong voice from this modest lady.

Its NOT induced me to start watching the show though.

Yes I have heard of Hannah Hauxwell but not read the book.

That sounds like a book I might seek out.

The programmes were beautifully and sensitively done, the young producer said in an interview he had fallen in love with the gentle, white-haired, middle aged lady, who took such a harsh life in her stride.

Thanks to the programmes and subsequent books she was able to buy a small house in her nearby village and had running hot water and heating - for the first time in her life.
