New computer.

Postby mo » Tue Oct 26, 2010 9:57 pm

I recently bought a new computer but need to get rid of my old one. The screen we took down the rubbish dump but I am a little concerned about the tower.
I know one needs to use passwords to get into anything you store but could anyone get into all of my information if I just dump it, or would it be safer to open it up and cut all the wires?

I think you can wipe all the information - or nearly all the information off it Mo - maybe one of our experts will know how - fingers crossed.

Thanks Rowan but it will be a bit difficult now because my new one has the tower built in so i wouldn't know how to connect it to wipe it all off as I have got rid of the old screen.

Mo - Ask someone who knows to take the hard disk out of the tower. That way you can destroy it.

They are cheap to buy and the tower would still be usable, with a replacement hard disk. Charities often send computers to schools in Africa, Asia, etc.

Remove hard disk(s) the rest of the tower can then be dumped. Either keep the hard disk(s) as what is stored on them should be retrievable in an emergency or alternatively destroy the hard drive(s). A large hammer is useful for this purpose.

Yes this is what I've been told too. Take the hard drive out and give it a hammering or throw it on a bonfire. (Guy Fawkes night coming up)

I took my hard drive out and soaked it in the sink in washing powder and very hot water.........

Maybe I should have used Vanish :groaner:

The tower I put on Freecycle, it's amazing how many would be computer builders want them.........

The hard drive is worth keeping if it is in decent condition and used for backup or storage.

4 screws hold most of them in (2 each side) and you can get a USB caddy for it to plug in as required.

HERE

Be aware caddies come in 2 different types and sizes depending on the size and type of HDD
Easy to do.

If not use a big hammer.
