The existing classification period for census data is 100
years. This means that as things stand we won't have access to the 1911,
1921 and 1931 census returns until some time after 2011, 2021 and 2031
respectively. For some time there has been a growing feeling that this might
be an unnecessarily long period and that there could be merit in moving to
the 70-year classification period, similar to the one which has been in
operation in the USA for some time. The American census returns for 1910,
1920 and 1930 are readily accessible on the Internet via Ancestry and
possibly other routes.
10 Downing St has set up a web-based means to petition the government, and a
petition has been set up to register interest in making this reduction in
the census classification period.Any British citizen, resident or
expatriate, wishing to add their name to the petition can do so.

There is some information about the current situation, which has already
advanced somewhat from the original position, at http://www.1911census.info/
This site contains a link to a sample image of the 1911 data."

It would be very helpful for genealogists to have more up to date census returns. I wish Scotland would do something like this - maybe we need to petition too.
