Being a widow back in the 30's with two small boys to bring up, my mother-in-law had to go to work. When we married it was at the start of the time when women with children were deciding that they didn't have to give up work if they had a family, that they could continue on if they wanted to.
As a 'latchkey' kid himself, Bernie always said that he didn't want that kind of life for his children - being pushed from pillar to post, to anyone who could look after them - so in spite of the fact that an extra wage would have been very useful, I stayed home and looked after the girls. He wanted me there when they left for school and when they arrived home again.
The extra holidays, etc. would have been nice but I really do think that my time was better spent being there for the girls. Unfortunately not all women have that choice - my mother-in-law for instance - but if it is at all possible, it is the best thing to do.
