Will you be priced off the road?

Postby maggiesaes » Fri Dec 01, 2006 10:04 am

If the propsed road charging were to come into effect, how would it affect you?

I live just 14 miles from Swansea, but there is only one bus which goes all the way there - via the villages - and would leave my bus stop at 7.40am.The return bus leaves Swansea at 5.40pm.
These time are not very practical for workers or shoppers, and we have to travel 11 miles to the park and ride so that is not much of a saving.
Our nearest station is 7 miles away in the local little town shopping centre.
It is hardly possible to get anywhere here in this hilly terain without a car and the saviour for many folk has been the much mailgned Tesco free bus to the shops.

Don't think I will.
I only do about 2,000 miles a year in my car these days.

I am lucky in that I live on a "showcase" bus route with a bus into town every quarter of an hour. I must say though (not having a car myself) if I get taken by car to do some shopping it is useful for stocking up on the heavy items - like cat food, cat litter, cooking oils etc, etc. Not a lot of fun struggling with them on the bus!

I know there is an on-line petition which you can sign, in fact I have signed it myself. Whilst I appreciate the need to reduce emissions and cut the rate of global warming, I am against this particular measure for the following reasons.

It will raise the price of food (a basic necessity) and all other goods because they are transported to our shops by road.

It will hit the disabled people who have no option other than to use their car.

It will also hit people in rural areas that do not have any or decent public transport.

Yes, I signed that petition, too.
Now, the headlines are saying it is a hoax!!!!
Hoax or not - over a million people have signed - so that must tell the government something.

Just found a forum called CRN that has a topic on it. Someone claimed it was a spoof site, but apparently it has the padlock on it so it is a secure site. (Someone called Jim Monroe had posted on there and he had a badger's head as an avatar. I seem to know that name. Is it "Bouncing Badger"? )

I also checked the Snopes site which deals with urban legends, but it does not have it listed - so I guess it is what it seems!

I signed via the No 10 website, and from what I'v eheard it seems genuine.
The implications are really unknown but the repercussions will be widespread as DL says with the price of thousands of items being inflated to cover extra transport costs.

What annoys me is that the pigs in parliament continue to travel around in their limousines paid for by us. They and the rich are quite happy to have motoring more expensive to drive thehoi polloi off the road as, the first lot don't pay and the second lot ----------------don't pay either: they claim it on their expenses.
