Will you be displaying your flag on Monday?

Where to start a debate on items in the News or Poliitcal Debate

Postby Shyla » Thu May 03, 2007 5:29 am

I am a NICE biddy!

Okay...to get into this conversation....

I must say...my flag is a symbol of freedom to me....an icon that stirs the soul and unites....doesn't separate....it's desirous for a grand purpose. Not just a piece of cloth....but a symbol of unity of what was and what is to come....I have faith in the future of my country.

Here is a quote meaningful to me....apropos to the topic I think....

It Is The Soldier, Not The Reporter, Who Has Given Us Freedom Of The Press.
It Is The Soldier, Not The Poet, Who Has Given Us Freedom Of Speech.
It Is The Soldier, Not The Campus Organizer, Who Has Given Us The Freedom To Demonstrate.
It Is The Soldier, Who Salutes The Flag.
Who Serves Beneath The Flag, And Whose Coffin Is Draped By The Flag.
Who Allows The Protester To Burn The Flag. Amen.

A simple piece of cloth..a rag on a stick....yes...but oh..so much more to those who trust and honor its meaning and heritage.

With all sincerity,
Joy
Shyla

I don't agree with that quote Shyla - not in the least. I cannot possibly believe that soldiers bring anything but violence and destruction. It is reformers who have helped us with freedom of the press and freedom of speech and it is student reformers who have earned the right to demonstrate.

I believe that your belief is sincere and I understand how your flag is a symbol of the freedoms that you believe you enjoy. My flag is a symbol to me too - it is a symbol of the Scottish people and their patriotism which incidentally has never disappeared through three hundred years of being united with another country. However, it is ONLY a symbol and the patriotism would not disappear if the flag disappeared. Burn it if you will is my view...it will change nothing.

It is a regrettable fact that today's military are an attack force rather than the Defence Force that they traditionally were.

Thus the soldier is no longer considered to be the hero; the 'rescuer'; he (in particular) can be considered a threat.

I would stress that this situation has been imposed on military personnel by three Governments who immediately spring to mind, who have clearly demonstrated a total lack of decency and integrity toward their own military citizens and through them to the peoples of other lands.

The soldier who is stressed and distressed and frustrated at what he is being asked to do can pose a danger.

In any event Joy, I would not single out one type of person. So many have contributed to (try to) make a better world.....; including pacifists.

The worker’s flag is slightly pink
It’s not as red as you may think
We must not let the people know
What Socialist’s thought long ago
Don’t let the scarlet banner float
We need the middle classes’ vote
Though our old-fashioned comrades sneer
We’ll stay in power for many a year.

Sass....since you write in flaming red and with antagonism, as always.... I shall do my best to avoid you.

You obviously cannot read what I've posted without even seeing RED!!!

That's too bad, I asked for peace on this subject, which you refuse to accept. That's your perogative, but a cease fire would be much more pleasant.

Sorry Joy, don't agree with you either, but you expected that.

"your" president has brought far too much disgrace on this great country of mine by pounding the war drums to the beat of his lies, that those of us who really are aware of what the flag means could cry crocodile tears!

That seems to be what the Scots desire, so I'm pleased to hear this, Rowan!

Geddit???.....gotit????............I'm exposed in my other identity,............awwwww Gawd!!!!!!

Miriam; You would not know peace if it bit you on the clacker! The same goes for pleasant...

What you actually want is to have your sarcastic shots (as usual) and not be challenged on them.

Whistle Dixie.

I did NOT refer in any personal way to you.
YOU set a personal agenda.
How many times have you done that on forums, Miriam??

You 'asked for peace on the subject' ??? Holy Macaroon!!

That is like your President presenting himself as a socialist humanitarian!

The definition of a cease-fire is NOT: " I chose to draw a gun on you, but think it only fair that you should not have drawn yours;...and I suggest that you put it down;- unlike myself."

DO do your best Miriam. Avoid me. God knows I try damned hard to avoid you.

You continue. I continue. You stop. I stop. IN THAT ORDER.
