Overcrowded prisons could be emptied very quickly just by bringing back corporal punishment (IMHO) :tantrum2:

I now see that not only will they be released early but they will be PAID £200 (ish) each compensation for bed and board.
Talk about get out of jail free cards.

This is yet another example of the media stirring up trouble. Those who MAY be considered for early release will have a few weeks or days left to run on their sentences. While to some it may seem wrong to let them out even with such a short length of time remaining to others it makes sense.

The early release makes room for more serious offenders who are coming up in front of a court. Of course one alernative would be to stop sending more serious offenders to prison owing to over crowding.

Now as for the media.........no where have I read that it has ALWAYS been the case that prison governors CAN release offenders early ( I think its with 14 days left to serve) under certain circumstances. So this is nothing new although the media and certain politicians would have us believe it is new.

Now if a man, or woman, is coming to the end of, let us say, a 5 year prison term what difference would it make to release them a few week or days early?

At least the governemnt are being up front about this as they could very well have instructed the parole board to give more offenders parole thus having the same desired effect........freeing up spaces.
