Address bar disappeared!

Postby vannin » Thu Nov 17, 2011 10:15 am

Problems again, no connection with the previous hassle of the router connection which is fine since the friend spent less than half an hour fixing it.

My address bar has vanished. I can still google via the Google home page, but have no browser on the bar. Accessed pages of tips for this problem, which I have tried without success.

You mean the bit you can type in URLs to, Viv?

You use Firefox or IE?

Thank you - yes Oddy! That bit, and it is IE. VM, I have tried F11, many other Fs :tantrum2: and gone into tools/ toolbars/ many times. The ticks (checks in American) are in place but the toolbar I want is not. Followed many tips on helpful pages......because I can still access links through Google Home Page.

Which IE and what operating system?

Sounds like a corrupted registry entry to me.

Have you upgraded IE lately, and if so from what to what and did you have add-ons when you upgraded?

I have XP and IE7. Have not upgraded and have no add-ons. Being so very ignorant, I don't understand registry at all.

When I went into a site which claims to 'Fix-it' - automatically! - among links I followed today, 'automatic' is not quite true because it gives me a string of instructions in Computereeze, including registry. So I left it.

I have closed down and opened again, clicking on F8 for a 'safe run'.

If this missing bar fails to appear at the weekend, I might contact again the man who sorted my recent problem when the router cable went naff - bless him for bringing a new one!

Viv,

Start/all programs (sic) /accessibility/system tools. System restore should be there. Restore your PC to an earlier time.

If you get stuck, let me know.........

It won't do it.
I tried it three times with different dates and each time, it started then closed then opened again and said the computer cannot be restored to that date so it was unchanged. :lam:

I get so hopeful each time I try a suggestion. Thank you for suggesting!!

Hmmmm! I take it you have somesort of malware checker? (Malware Bytes is good, and is free)

You could try Start/run sfc /scannow, there is meant to be a gap between the sfc and the /scannow. It will check your files for you.

Have you checked you have toolbars enabled in IE?

If you have no luck, try Glary Utilities, it is free. It will clean everything up and there is an option to use their system restore.

OR
Try pressing F11................*hopeful*

Monsy, I will try - anything! My poor F11 key is asking me to buzz off, it has been pressed that often.

I am getting by without that toolbar but yesterday, perhaps because I kept probing into the registry sites, Microsoft and Norton started treating me as a spy and blocked ALL of Google against me for most of the day, with Norton declining to scan; and messages that there was Unauthorised Access ' Send terminate message to window'.
In Registry,(a Wizard prompt) when I first pressed Start, then Run\'regedit'\(OK) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Microsoft\Int expl Toolbar\Shell Browser\ IT Bar Layout. Right click then click delete, I think I clicked delete too soon. Panicked over the keys of registry. But I guess Oddie is right re corrupted registry entry.

I went back to repeat it but by then 'Shell Browser' (sounds like beachcomber) had gone away.

Right, I have run Glary Utilities. It found 521 errors in Registry - danger level. It offered a free repair of the first fifteen errors then I should purchase the Utilities fixer. There is no way to find out 'how much'. Being wary at the moment, I have left it while I ponder.

Thank you again for all suggestions.
