To put stuff from an old video tape on to a dvd, I'd like to have a go, if it's anything too complicated don't bother replying 'cos I wont be able to do it

Yes Suzi, it is quite possible to do if you have a DVD recorder. It will depend on what kind of DVD recorder you've got though, but if you look at the instruction manual it should tell you how to do it.

I have a dual DVD/VHS video recorder and copying one format to the other is dead easy.

I think you said you had a TV card Suzi, check what connections are on it. If you have a scart socket or an ariel input, you can hook the video player into them and record to hard disk. Then burn it to a DVD, assuming you have a DVD burner.
It might even be possible to burn direct to DVD.
I bought a DVD recorder (cause we had 12 years worth of videos of the grandsons on about 20 odd VHS tapes) Now we have about 15 DVD's in a small tub.
