Poor Jovi

Somehow or other Jovi has managed to lose a claw on his front right paw. He went for his walk this morning and he was ok when he got back. I went off to work and Dave noticed him licking the floor. Then he noticed a trail of blood stains. On examination he saw that it was Jovi's paw was bleeding badly.
The thing is we never heard him cry out and don't know how or where he did it. Dave phoned the vet and she told us just to keep an eye on it and if it looks to be getting inflamed to take him down for antibiotics.
When I came in this afternoon, he was running around like an idiot as usual and doesn't seem unduly worried about, though he did yelp when I tried to take a closer look at it.
It makes my eyes water just thinking about it, it must be so painful.

I wonder if he'll grow a new claw. It has been comp-letely ripped out.

He might, it would be like us losing a fingernail, wouldn't it?

They soon heal Daisy, I know I don't have to warn you about grass seeds getting into the wound.

I had a Welsh Springer once, she was forever at the vet getting them dug out, even though I checked her twice a day! The worst one was when she had to have an operation to have one dug out of her female parts. I only realised when a huge abscess appeared. Blech!

Crumbs Daisy, you don't do my heart any good - I was expecting the worst there.
Glad Jovi is OK. Just surprised the vet didn't want to check him over.
I agree with Monsy, I think his nail will grow back.

If a dog has had a nail cut too short - into the quick - Gentian Violets is good for stopping the bleeding.

We use potassium permanganate (sp?) though it does tend to leave brown/purple stains if you are not careful. This was advised by our poodle breeder friend.

Sounds the same stuff, Daisy - Gentian Violets can leave a purple coloured stain - which is murder to try to remove.

When I was at boarding school and had a succession of mouth ulcers, Sister Infirmarian used to paint my mouth with Gention violet! Boy, was I down in the mouth?!

My mother used to have mouth ulcers painted with Gentian Violet at the hospital regularly when I was a child, but that was a bright violet colour not purple.
Jovi's paw is still sore if we touch it and he keeps licking it. I think I might take him to the vet if he still keeps licking.

If he were mine, I would take him - better to be safe than sorry.
Has the bleeding stopped?

Dave took him this afternoon at 4.30. The vet cleaned it out which made him yelp a bit (Jovi not Dave). No antibiotics just painkillers and Hibiscrub to use every day. He has an emerald green bandage on the paw at the moment, to come off tomorrow. I've been trying to get a photo, but you know what dogs are like when there is a camera around. The vet said that a new claw should grow. He is limping a bit, but then forgets himself and starts running around and shaking the life out of his 'ragger'

As long as he is alright.

My vet told me some time ago, that the different coloured bandages are for a reason.
Something to do with the severity of the problem - I think.
