A call to verse

A call to verse

Postby daffyd » Mon Mar 19, 2012 4:31 pm

There is poetry in each one of us
Maybe not the written word
But in the rhythm that flows through our being
In a song that's not always heard
Not all of us are 'published' poets
But we have that rhythm in our soul
If we would but shed our fears
We could easily reach that goal.

Poetry is in its self a therapy
That frees restraints of the mind
It is boundless in its vastness
A bounty to mankind
Poetry is an inner echo
Of what your psyche would love to do
So do not doubt your 'poet's heart'
Let your visions come shining through.

Ah sent mah wee lad a birthday card.... he's sojourning in America, and ah put in the card a few dollars, ye ken, the way you do. Then to mah surprise ah received this touching..... grateful acknowledgement.......

Birthday Cards and Poems.

I got home late, Aboot seven thirty Face all haggard Clothes all dirty Went to the fridge To get me a beer But the nectar was gone I drank it last year. So I sat doon a spell to ponder my quandary I wonder if there's any Deed presidents in the laundry. Then I opened your card And what did I see Andrew Jackson and Grant staring at me, and that letter of verse struck like a chord and that rapier wit cut like a (s)word. So I went to the store to get what I must from a shelf in the back gathering dust. Boddingtons is smooth but that's not my sale what I feel like tonight Is some Newcastle Brown Ale. Keep all your Budweiser your Pabst and Bud lite I know what I want the rest don't taste right. So back home I sped with booty in hand a treasure to be sure from jolly England. I got back in the hoose shook off the snow and drank me a toast to the best man I know.

That was me......(sob)...... it brings a tear too your een!

My Little Cockney Sparrow

I 'ad a little bird like that
Stuffed an' stood up on a twig
Housed in an upturned fish bowl
Well, 'e wasn't very big.

'ad a sparkle in 'is eye 'e did, but
Ah' never 'eard him sing
Ah called 'im Alfie, me ole cock sparrow
Looked after 'im like a king.

Ah carried 'im up the 'Apples & Pears
When ah went up there tuh kip
Placed 'im on the bedside table
'cause mah room was such a tip.

Ah 'eard a ringing on the 'Dog and Bone'
An ah reached out, half asleep
Knocked ole Alfie crashing tuh the floor
He never let out a peep.

Nah Alfie's upturned fish bowl
Lies broken on the floor
I'll never keep another bird
No! Not me, no more!

Gone Fishing.

I looked out of the window
And witnessed an early dawn
Made a decision, to go fishing
And forego cutting the lawn.
My fishing gear was quickly packed
So I set off down the lane,
Huge clouds did soon assemble
A prelude to heavy rain.

I made it to the river bank
Set up my rod and line
Baited my hook and made a cast
Whilst hoping the sun would shine.
Instead I heard the thunder
And then saw the lightning flash,
The wind tore trees up by their root
And they then to earth did crash.

I lay prostrate upon the ground
Almost at one with the sodden grass
Mumbling long forgotten prayers
Praying for that hurricane to pass.
And pass it did....eventually
Wind abating from roar, to whine,
Trudging home I found my fishing rod
With a fat trout upon the line.

THE ROCK THAT WEPT

I watched the saline droplets well up into his eyes
Spill over and run freely to my great surprise.
He was my hero my rock, my friend
And to my daily needs he'd tend
What disaster could cause such grief
His face was a mask of disbelief
I later learned to my dismay
His final visit was to be today.

My health prognosis was never good
The medics had done all they could
I'd lived my life in a metal shroud
He was my Dad and I was proud
That he called me son and stroked my head
He held my hand and sat by my bed
Alas those tears never before seen
Were there when they turned off my machine

Fear not dear friend 'tis but a poem
A darkened verse as my mind did roam
Inspired by a care worn sigh
When someone asked if a man could cry
Men are beings wherein emotions dwell
And experience life in every cell
To control ones feelings does not mean
That one is bereft, because they're not seen
A weakness is ascribed to tears
So man has learned to hide his fears
Instead he cries within his being
And grieves without the whole world seeing.

My Baltic Adventure

I felt it was time to leave these shores
And explore the lands to the North
So I booked myself a Baltic cruise
And I got my money's worth.
I set sail from the Southampton port
The skies were an azure blue
Bearing left through the English channel
Then heading North on the compass true.

Kristiansand was my first port of call
I was greeted by a local moose
Albeit stuffed, and set on wheels
Aye, chained so it would not get loose.
The scenery, the architecture,
The history turned ones head
It was a place I was loathe to leave
But my itinerary pointed North instead.

Aye North to Copenhagen
I saw the Mermaid on the rock
Further on to the port of Helsinki
And another fabulous place to dock.
Still further North to St Petersburg
A magnificent Russian port
Catherine Palace in all its splendour
Ensured you weren't sold short.

One cannot relate the Baltic tale
By omitting ports of call
So full astern me hearties
And I'll try and include them all.
Leaving Copenhagen and the Mermaid on the rock
We headed north to Visby, an island paradise
A force six gale sprang up
And the swell was not very nice.

We could not berth alongside
Nor use tenders to the shore
So we just had to ride out the sudden storm
We couldn't do much more.
This cruising crowd are hardy
And they enjoy this holiday time at sea
There was little sign of mal-de-mer
We all turned up for tea.

We set a course for Stockholm
And arrived there in great style
With a Swedish band to greet us..... ...
Tour buses lined up, in single file.
A truly wonderful city
Seen on a bright warm sunny day
Wide boulevards and great green parks
Shop assistants, who had a smile and winning way.

I touched upon Helsinki.................
A favourite port of mine
I visited the Olympic Stadium
And sampled a wee glass of the local wine.......
A photographic paradise
Architecture to stun the mind
Finland is a treasure trove
Any fault was hard to find.

St Petersburg, the jewel in the crown
Deserves an accolade of its own
For plain words cannot describe
The splendour that was shown.
The palaces, the massive public squares
The churches, tall spires and golden dome...........
The bridges and the waterways
This is what we came to see, this is why we all left home.

Little Lithuania offered us a newly opened port
Klaipeda, new on the tourist trail
The wooden structured buildings
Tried to impress, they didn't fail
So different from the grandeur
We had encountered upon this cruise
We were met by dancing schoolchildren
Who had been sent to us amuse............

Then we set sail for England
Southampton, and then onward home
Having cruised the Baltic
No more this year to roam.

When the workmen dig a hole in the road it is like a magnet, people gather in small groups with that shared look of curiosity on their faces..... I remember when.....

I watched the road gang working at a spot just past my gate
Four of them were not on time, whilst the other three were late.
It took them forty minutes to unload their tools from off the cart
It was nearly time for their morning break, so they just didn't start.
They had erected their wee canvas tent, equipped with benches and a table
The tent, it sort of leaned a bit and to me looked quite unstable.
The youngest lad was sent to fetch hot water for their tea,
He must have tried six houses, before he got to me.

"Will you be after giving us a boiling, so that we can make the brew,
Sure it's tursty work, all this digging for me and dat road crew."
I obliged them with hot water, filling four black and smoked stained cans,
"Is your foreman out there with you?"
"Sur he's gone back to get the plans."
About an hour later the foreman arrived and gave a shout,
"How many of yis in there?"
"Siven sir."
"Then half of yis, come out.

Now Paddy, Shaun and Kevin, and dat udder fellah Mick
I brought yis each a shovel now, so come and take your pick."
"Sure we canna dig with these sur, the road is much too hard."
"Eejit, we'll use the compressor."
"Sur, we left it in the yard."
"We have got to have this hole dug, to a depth of siven feet!"
"We can dig it on the grass verge sur, its softer than the street."
"Now dares a man dat knows the game, I'm sure dat he'll go far,
And when you've dug the spoil from dare, just pile it round dat car.

No more than siven feet now" he advised them without a grin
"For if you take out more dan dat, it'll not all go back in."
They started on their digging, and did so methodically
And that is when the tent fell down, exposing three others drinking tea.
"I want half of yis on traffic cones, the rest can fix the tent"
They scampered quickly to their ordained tasks, and off the foreman went.
The owner of the house next door came out to check his car,
A 'Denver Boot' of spoil and soil clear up to his tow-bar.

"What in blazes are you doing digging up my drive and verge?"
At this point they hit a water pipe and water did emerge.
The neighbour and the road gang did argue in the spray,
"Pack up your gear me bhoy- ohs and let's be on our way."
The foreman had returned to them, to rescue his road crew,
"The hole we've dug in this Park Drive, should be in dat, Park View!"

A Village Tale

There once were two boys, one five and one three
Who lived in a village, far over the sea.
These boys had a dog, a retriever no less,
And between them, all three, they made such a mess.
Samuel, Joshua and Willie, the dog
Went into the garden to hunt down a frog.
They chased it through bushes and into a pond
And watched as it hopped to the garden beyond.

“What shall we do now?” said Samuel to Josh,
“Best go inside and give our hands a quick wash.”
But Willie had found a wee hole in the fence,
A small one to start with, but he made it immense.
He was after the frog, for he was a retriever,
No one could say he was an underachiever.
Samuel and Josh watched interested in him
As the frog and the dog, both went for a swim.

Then their grandpa raised them all with a shout
“You boys, come here, and you Willie, get out!”
The boys came at once at their grandpa’s command
For he had the cookie jar, right there in his hand.
Now Willie he pondered, er, cookie or frog?
He decided on cookies, that hungry ole dog.
Grandpa and the boys and old Willies as well
Settled for cookies, whilst the frog waved farewell.

A Highland Curiousity

My ship had suffered in the storm,
Lost her canvas, then her mast.
The rocks o’ Beauly tore out her keel
Before my feet touched shore at last.
I made my way towards Inverness,
In rain that left me sodden
It was April 1746
A battle raged at Culloden.

No shelter was afforded me
No inhabitants showed their face,
Doors were closed and shutters barred
As I reeled from place to place.
Redcoated soldiers roamed in packs
Lowland Scotsmen led the way,
Heiland families fought and died
So that Charlie could have his day!

Heiland clans did shed their blood
As they fought on Culloden field,
No quarter asked, no quarter given
Scot killed Scot, for none would yield.
The heilanders were massacred
And as a rabble, put to rout.
Cumberland ordered, “No mercy today”
And his armies took up the shout!

And so it was they found me
Huddled, shivering behind a dyke
The flotsam of humanity
Of which they’d seen no like.
Bedraggled and bewildered
I ranted of voyages overseas,
My life was spared by these Lowlanders
Who comprehended not, CHINESE!!

Aye, we are arl doomed, doomed ah tell ye!

Over the Styx

The mist lay heavy o’er the lake
Like a wall of thick white cloud.
Swirling, wet and quite opaque
It did the ferryman, enshroud.
It hid from the weary pilgrim
The ferryman’s long gaunt face,
There was a silence in the interim
As the pilgrim took up his place.

The lake enjoined the River Styx
Which every soul must cross,
The small craft held no more than six
Plus a shackled albatross.
The bird, a millstone around it’s neck
Did perch upon the prow,
The pilgrim puzzled turned to the fore deck
A frown did crease his brow.

The ferryman stretched out his bony hand
It was his payment that he sought,
The payment demanded ‘ere they could land
Had made the passengers quite distraught.
The ferryman’s fee was their earthly soul
For that journey over the Styx.
Death was the claimant of this toll
From the unsuspecting six.

The pilgrim struck out and broke the chain
That restrained the large white bird.
The millstone cracked and broke in twain
And it’s cry of freedom, heard.
The ferryman withdrew his hand
The pilgrim moved to take the oar,
The mist dispersed, he could see the land
So brought his charges, safe to shore.

THE POWER THAT LIES WITHIN.

Ascend to Heaven through your internal self
Follow not the ways of wayward man
Leave not your intuition upon the shelf
Do not resist the Master Plan.
Superconsciousness should be your aim
Let your soul direct your mind,
These sham religions are all the same
Pure sectarianism, and to each other, blind.

Self realisation should be your goal
Once attained, you're on your way,
The first step is to know your soul
Take that first step, now, today.
Take the time to look at the inner you
Through that window in your mind,
Take the time to think your feelings through
The right path is there to find.

That path, it starts within you
In your subconscious, buried deep,
Meditation is your first clue
Wide awake, and yet asleep.
Awake, to the truth that is in your heart
Asleep, to confusion and dismay,
The Power will find you if you play your part
Meditate with me, today.

The Power that lies within you
Is uncorrupted, strong and bold,
It's there in every cell and sinew
It is a miracle to behold.
You hold the key to this power source
Unlock the same ere it's too late
You can reap the benefits of this wondrous force
If you would but relax, and Meditate!

H.M.S. ‘VANGUARD’ 1953

It was in the month of June, the year, 1953
I know it was a long time ago
But that’s twixt you and me.
Almost sixty years ago
My own Diamond Jubilee.
I remember very well that inspection
By Her Majesty the Queen
It was choreographed to perfection
A most engaging scene.

Why, may you ask should memory serve me thus
It was the first time I’d been addressed by Royalty
And it caused an awful fuss.
I remember Her Majesty looking up into my eyes
(She is quite a small Sovereign)
I mean small that is, in size.
With a hint of a Mona Lisa smile
Playing about her lips
She said, and I must confess,
In a sort of stage whisper

“You are standing on my dress”

Well! My toes involuntarily curled up
Within my size nine shoe
Thus removing the weight and releasing
That gown of Azure blue.
She acknowledged the Guard of Honour
With a gracious knowing smile
Her eyes lingered upon me
For what seemed an eternal while.

Well I did not know whether to blush or f**t
In fact did both, unwise
Well not being allowed to speak
I could hardly apologise.
That was not to be my last meeting with Her Majesty
Our paths were to cross again
I made sure my size nines kept out of reach
Of her gown and that damned train.
