Advice about meat pies.

Postby caroljoyce » Wed Jul 04, 2018 7:41 am

I bought some beef steak pies yesterday and forgot about them. They were in the boot of the car for about 6 hours until I remembered.

Do you think they'll be safe to eat?

Normally yes, but not under current conditions.

You could try lifting the "lid " and having a sniff, but I wouldn't risk it.

Those of a certain age, like me, are far more at risk from E. co'r, salmonella and the like.

Bear in mind that it is not unusual for processors to cook meat that is coming up to its "Use By" date (to give it a new date) and then use it in pies, sausage rolls and the like.

I decided to chance it. I smelled at them first and there wasn't the slightest hint of a smell about them so I assumed they were ok.

I cooked them and I could tell they were ok by the taste.

Big relief.

You are much braver than I, Carole.

One thing .................. why did you come on here to ask for advice about it?

I thought it would be interesting to see what other people would do in the circumstances.

I'm sorry, Carol.

If you take those sorts of chalices I don't want to marry you any more!

Yes I decided this was the most sensible way to decide.

Aw don't break my heart laurie.

I had it on good authority (after I'd posted on here) that beef is ok out of the fridge for three days.

Mind you - I wouldn't risk that long but in this instance the sniff & taste test worked alright. :)

You're right, of course, Carol.

We tend to forget that before the days of domestic refrigerators, which many of us remember, perishables were kept, covered, in a cool larder for days and a grid covers meat safe in most houses.

A sniff and a bit of experience was a well used skill.
